Radar/Laser Detection

Radar Detectors do more than offer protection from speeding infractions, they can warn you when the speed limit has changed and if you're approaching driving hazards along your route by combining GPS information. Many devices also provide Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone integration, offering speed-related information based on your immediate GPS location. The key to choosing the right detector for you is understanding how they work and what the different options do.

Understanding Radar Bands

Police radar can operate on X band, K band, or Ka band. Ka band is currently the most widely used since the radar guns are smaller, and have narrower transmitter beamwidths, which allows for a narrower target focus. X band is the oldest type of police radar frequency, but it is not used as frequently today as it used to be. Police radar began detecting with K band a few decades after X band was introduced. The biggest problem with the K band is that it leads to a lot of false alerts given. Ka band is almost certainly the police. These are the most recent and the best radar band frequencies that law enforcement can operate on because Ka band is the hardest frequency to detect, and only the best radar detectors can do so.

Windhsield Mounted Detectors

These devices are mounted on the dash or adhered to the inside of the windshield, powered via a cable that plugs into the vehicle’s cigarette lighter or other electrical source.

Pros Include:

  • Typically cost Less than an Integrated Radar Detector.

  • Can be easily removed for use in another vehicle.

Cons Include:

  • Visible from outside of the vehicle.

  • Coated windshields can prevent the unit from detecting radar signals.

  • Not a clean look when using a corded unit

Integrated Detectors

Built-in detectors are permanently installed into the vehicle, with a sensor mounted in the grill and a control unit mounted inside the cabin of the vehicle. Some models include a rear sensor that can be mounted to the rear end of the vehicle offering 360 degree protection.

Pros Include:

  • Not visible from the outside of the vehicle, built-in to prevent theft and detection.

  • More sensitivity, provides earlier warning on weaker signals.

  • Clean installation, no cords, no fuss.

Cons Include:

  • More expensive than Dash/Window Mounted detectors.
